Quinta do Lago South was built by North American architect William Mitchell and opened in 1974. Since then, the site has hosted eight editions of the Portugal Open (1976, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2001) as well as many other professional and amateur competitions. The course, a 6 500 m par 72, is set in a unique landscape of dense pine groves, lakes and wild plants, against the backdrop of the spectacular Ria Formosa.

All fairways offer the player generous landing zones as well as a well-defined route between the dense pine groves they line. The layout encourages players to use the driver. In order to reach the greens with a few strokes, a precise striking technique is necessary. Over the course of the game, players must overcome several doglegs and a series of strategically placed obstacles in the line, making it difficult for anyone deviating from the optimum position to play. The first nine holes favor a draw when teeing off, while in holes 10 through 18, a fade gives better results. Hole 8, 15 and 18 have the reputation of being the most challenging for pros, and holes 3, 12 and 17 are best for birdie.

The courses of Quinta do Lago offer a pleasant golfing experience that you will not forget and that you would like to repeat. At hole 19 every player has the opportunity to take a deep breath and review the game.
